We will be great again: Historical victimhood in populist discourse

چکیده
This article explores historical victimhood as a feature of contemporary populist discourse. It is about how leaders invoke meta-history to make self-victimising claims means for consolidating power. I argue that propagates forked consciousness – view history series junctures where good fought evil enables the projection alleged into past and future, while present portrayed regenerating fateful choice between humiliation promised golden age. focus on cases United States Turkey examine two key speeches delivered by presidents Donald Trump Recep Tayyip Erdo?an in 2017. My case-study approach aims show same narrative form victimhood, with its temporal logic imaginary, latches widely different contexts political cultures effect conflating leader people, solidifying divisions society, threatening opponents.
